Whither goes
the Oil Deal?

though declared from housetop are “years away and exist only
in the hypothetically realm.” A senior Bush administration
office, an Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs,
Nicholas Burns who has emerged as the
point man for negotiations with India, said this bluntly while
addressing the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced
International Studies on December 1.Where does India stand now

Media: Cleansing Indian
Public Life
Jyotika J. Thukral
Corruption
is endemic to Indian public life. The experiences of Indians
in their daily chores bring home the tormenting tales of
bribery and sleaze at all levels of government and private
functioning. But this latest exposure of members of India
Parliament accepting a few thousand rupees to oblige by asking questions
in parliament adds another shocking tale. here is the very
Parliament on sale.

Pauperisation of Farmers: Punjab sits on Powder Keg
Gobind Thukral
THESE are upsetting facts that stare
anyone who has even a slight consideration for Punjab. In the
next five to ten years, marginal farmers owning one hectare or
less would disappear and join the large army of unemployed.
The number of unemployed, educated or uneducated is already a
neat 24 lakh. In hey days of Green Revolution in 1971, they
were 5.17 lakh strong farming families. Small farmers owning
up to two hectares would meet the same destiny in to ten years
later.

Drought Vulnerability: Various Facets
Manju Singh
Drought,
an insidious hazard of nature should not be viewed as merely a
physical phenomenon. Its impact on society results from the
interplay between a natural event and the people's profile.
Human beings often exacerbate the impact of drought. Recent
droughts in both developing and developed countries and the
resulting economic and environmental impacts and personal
hardship have underscored the vulnerability of all societies to
this "natural" hazard. |

Paheli is no Riddle. It is an Exposition of
Love
Jyotika J. Thukral
Literally
Paheli means a riddle. Well, don’t get me wrong for we have no
riddles to solve. Here is a great movie to watch. Based on a
legendary folktale called Duvidha by novelist Vijaydan Detha, it
was Paheli which got the judges consent to be nominated to the
78th Academy Award® (Oscar) this year. |

Culture
|
|
Origin of Punjabi Language, Literature and
Culture
Language,
basically a vehicle of communication and thought has been at the center of parochial and communal
politics for long time in the Indian sub continent. Region and relgion have often clouded
our vision about language and culture and our approach has
neither been rational nor open. |
