Emerging Political
Dynasties
WITH
emphasis on big rallies, politics in Punjab has degenerated from ideas to
crowds and samosas. Ruling Congress and Akal opposition Akali Dal a few
months away from the assembly polls are trying to beat each other with
big public rallies all around the state. More

Blow to
Farmers
Gobind Thukral
INDIAN political class is a bundle
of contradictions. Indian constitution that enshrines socialism in
its preamble and grants variety of rights, takes most of these by
a stroke of pen through amendments and different laws. It is,
perhaps, in the nature of democracy that different competing
ideologies make their mark on the political map. But what we can
make out of the ideologies when these turn out to be a bag full of
opportunism and catchy slogans.

The Lost Glory of
Hockey
ONCE
at the world sports meets hockey was synonymous with India.
After partition, the two countries, India and Pakistan fought
for hockey laurels. Hockey was just not game like cricket to
be played leisurely and where the rich and famous joined. It
was peoples’ game; played vigorously on any open space with
gusto as it caught the imagination of young generations at the
school and college play grounds. Harjap Singh Aujla, a
well know engineer from New Jersey is an avid writer and
hockey enthusiast. More |

Rural Punjab in Turmoil
Dr. Jaspal Singh
THE physical environs of most
of the villages in Punjab are changing fast. The
peasant proprietor living within the thirty
kilometer radius of big town thinks only in terms of

Terror Affecting Ties
FOR Pakistan it is as with India so
with Afghanistan. Terrorism is not only affecting good friendly relations,
but hampering the economic development of the region. With good friendly
relations, these three countries and could usher big progress, increase
trade and help each other in host of fields; education, industrial
development and tourism.

For kind Attention of Karl Marx and Mao Zedong
KARL Marx while striving
earnestly to create a new man was always emphatic about morality. The
whole Marxian lexicon and later practices emphasised that capitalism
or the bourgeoisie order was demeaning and immoral where there was
neither equality nor justice. Women were either symbols of sex or
chattel.

Labour MP John McDonnell Voices Concern about Punjabis
FOR a strong community of 7
lakh in Britain at least some members of House of Commons are raising
their voice. Punjabis over the past century has not only made
significant contribution to wealth creation in England, but have
made huge sacrifices in defending the British empire during the
two world wars. It is also well recognised that many of them
fought valiantly against the British occupation of India. More

Canadian Immigration Laws: Need for Change
LAWS define rights, seek to protect them
and tend to punish those who violate them. Canadian
immigration laws recently amended seeking to curb tendency to
betray spouses, having attained immigration by virtue of
marriage, still are being exploited by unscrupulous immigrants
entering after marrying Canadian immigrants.
Senior lawyer and
commentator Joginder Singh Toor, now on a visit to
Canada finds the problem serious enough calling for the
attention of the law makers.

Muslims and Creation of Pakistan - I
Professor J.S. Grewal
IN the
kingdom of Ranjit Singh in the early nineteenth century, individual Muslims
and tribal leaders became co-sharers of power and economic advantages at
subordinate levels. The case of the Fakir Brothers is well known. Artillery
Generals like Sultan Mahmud and Ilahi Bakhsh enjoyed large jagirs. The
Tiwana horsemen formed the nucleus of Ranjit Singh’s
impressive cavalry. Many of the former Muslim potentates
accepted jagirs from Ranjit
Singh either as pension or for service. More |
