Rituals All
India
seems to have mastered the art of turning everything into a ritual. It
may be religion or politics. Other institutions like birth, marriage
and even death are part of grand rituals. Quickly the substance is
lost and ceremonies take over, at times turning these into a farce.
India has been home to world’s grand religions, worship of nature in
its raw powers, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism besides
several other small religions. More

Gobind Thukral
IN a
few weeks time, Punjab’s voters will have a chance to elect
another government. It is a privilege that democracy offers them
so often. Side by side they would be coaxed, cajoled and offered
almost everything under the sun. Money, caste, religion and clan
politics would be in full display Observers of Punjab’s
political landscape are asserting that this would be one of the
costliest elections so far. More |

LITERATURE
Exile and Kingdom
Dr. Jaspal Singh
HUMAN beings speak thousands of
languages, and many more thousands dialects and socio-lects.
Punjabi, incidentally is one of the major languages of
the world. But the literary output in this language does
not commensurate with the number of its speakers. There
have been very few Punjabi poets who can be reckoned
among the outstanding world poets. More

Controversy
on Women’s Rights
Joginder Singh Toor
Supreme
Court judgment in S.R.Batra’s case has stirred an other
controversy on women’s rights granted recently under the
Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act,2005. Does it
nullify their rights?. Is a big question. Way
back in 1987 the Supreme Court of India in Atma Devi’s case
observed that “In England the rights of the spouses to the
matrimonial home are governed by the Matrimonial Homes Act,1967,
no such right exists in India.” More

Punjabi Film Music: Sardul Kwatra and his Soulful
Music
Harjap Singh Aujla
Sometimes
I feel that there are several important aspects of the history of Punjab,
which have gone unrecorded. Although Punjabi pop music is currently
dominating the musical scene of India, yet no one has taken pains to
discover the pioneering times of its mother, the folk and light Punjabi
music. More
