A Slice
of Life
Gobind Thukral in Halifax
IN
March this year, during my sojourn with a dear old friend in
Halifax, I had a chance look at book lying in the family room. It
had an intriguing title, “Live Beyond 139 years- Joyous and
Wrinkle Free”.

STYLE often marks the man. If that be so how would we mark the
new Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal? Let us ignore
that the octogenarian Akali politician in his 80th year for his
filial love. With five major portfolios in his own pocket and an
equal number of close relatives as important cabinet ministers,
this government is virtually owned by the Badals. Now the
younger Badal, Sukhbir Singh is the acting president of the
ruling Akali Dal. He calls the shots and has begun controlling
the reigns of the government. It is only matter of time when
takes the real charge. More

Russia
and China Marching Toward a Multipolar World
Dr. Sawraj Singh
THE just concluded President Hu
Jin Tao’s trip to Russia is an event of great historical
importance. This trip gives a clear signal that the days of a
unipolar world led by the world’s only superpower are very
limited and the new world order, a multipolar world, has already
become a reality. More
North
America more vulnerable to climate change
“BY the end of this century, fires
will consume twice as much forest annually in Canada, a fifth of
the currently snowy Arctic will be greened by tundra and Great
Lakes water levels will have plunged still lower.

Statistical Skulduggery
Vinod Anand
IT quite often happens that those
who produce data seldom use them, and those who use data seldom
produce them. This anomalous situation creates problems,
especially for the users of data, who have to rely on unreliable
secondary data and this, by and large, extremely distorts their
studies. More

Democratisation of Sikh Society |

Jagpal S. Tiwana
THE Punjabi society is comparatively free
from the caste biases that are otherwise so widely prevalent in
rest of India. A story 'Where people vote for charisma not
caste' in the Indian Express of January 27, 2007 on the eve of
Punjab elections reported Punjabi voters paying little attention
to the castes of the candidates (1). More

CANCER treatment could be on the brink of a
revolution. It follows a study showing that it may be possible appreciably
improve the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs without causing serious side

with extremely low doses of anti-cancer drugs. More

ON 8th of April, 2007, the Indians saw, the top
elite of the two wings of the State face to face. The
executive and the Judiciary at a conference of chief
ministers and chief justices of the state high courts, also
the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Chief Justice
of India Justice K.G.Balakrishnan were at daggers drawn. The
issue was the jurisdiction of each wing, the executive and

Ghulam
Haider: Punjab Pioneering Musician-3
Harjap Singh Aujla
K.
L Saigal, during those days,
was the leading most male film singer in India. He hailed from Jullundur in
Punjab, but it is a pity that Ghulam Haider could not have the opportunity
to compose tunes for him. A second generation music director from
Punjab Khurshid Anwar, was however luckier, he composed the music for a
Saigal –Suraiya starrer “Parvana”, which became a very popular hit.
Rather than insistence on heavy classical compositions attempted by most of
the other music directors, Ghulam Haider’s
lighter style of applied classical music was better received by the cinema
going public. This got him fame and a spate of invitations from Bombay,
which by mid forties had replaced Calcutta as the leading film city of
India. More

Vancouver third best
livable city
THERE were
never many doubts. But now we are told by experts that Vancouver ranked third in
a global survey for its overall quality of life, narrowly losing out to Swiss
cities Zurich and Geneva. Vancouver had high scores across the board, but its
weak spot was crime. Crime rate in North America are higher than Europe. All
the cities in Canada covered by the survey were the top 25 ranking for health
and sanitation, with Calgary ranking as the top city in the world. More
No political obituary
for the rock star' MP yet
FOR the fifth straight year, Belinda Stronach, 40,
the Liberal MP from Newmarket-Aurora, has announced that she was leaving federal
politics. But it may not be the end of a short and entertaining career in
politics, as journalists are saying, “it’s far too soon to write her political
obituary, and that she's merely regrouping for a run at the Liberal leadership
down the road.” More
