is a change in law in some western countries for bringing a lawsuit in a libel
action for defamatory material published either in a newspaper or broadcast.
Prescribing a short limitation period for serving a prior notice on each of the
respondents is a welcome step in the legal history of the law of libel and
slander. More

India’s prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the proclaimed architect of
‘reforms’ or the free booting economy that has put billions in the

ostentatious living. He bemoans at the meeting of the captains of
industry, India’s filthy rich lords that their fat salaries into crores
per year as disturbing the common man. This is causing heart burns and
disenchantment and could lead to serious social tensions. More

Punjab: Deadly Mix of
Religion and Politics Gobind Thukral FOR over a fortnight Punjab has been on the boil. Swords were out as was the
verbal charade. As people frightened of the return of old gory violence across
North West of India prayed for peace, the hidebound religious leaders called for
revenge and the politicians found consolidation of their respective political
bases. More
Dera Culture and the
Indolence of the Mind Currently Punjab is home to
scores of Deras. A police count puts these at 900. Who are these people
turning to the Deras, some with dubious reputation? What makes them leave the
precincts of an organised religion? At one level, there has been culture
in India of these Maths, Deras and Akharas of sadhus and saints for ages.

Dr. Jaspal Singh Karl
Marx and Fredrick Angels extensively covered the 1857 Revolt of the
British Indian Army for the “New York Daily Tribune”. Sitting in London,
the two great philosophers and writers presented before the world the
extent and range of the revolt which they christened a “national
uprising” against colonial occupation of an ancient country. More
Krishan Chander and
Lahore Ishtiaq Ahmed MY article 'Street theatre in Delhi' dated
Saturday, March 31, 2007, evoked strong emotions in India and Pakistan because
the veteran writer Krishan Chander's name had been mentioned in connection with
the play I saw performed. Many of us are hugely in debt to him for inspiring in
us a humanism, which has survived all the traumas of the late twentieth century.

A Journey to the
birthplace of Bhagat Singh Chaman Lal I
had planned to visit Lahore on 23rd March, 2006 which was 75th martyrdom
anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. I had a wish that Indian and Pakistani
people should together commemorate this historic event. That could not
materialize. But this year an unexpected invitation came to present a paper on
Dr. B.R.Ambedkar on his birth anniversary at Lahore on 13th April. The
invitation came from Ganga Ram Heritage Foundation. It fulfilled my desire to
seek Pakistan as well visit the places associated with the great martyr Bhagat
Singh. More
Bhai Santa Singh A Unique Exponent of Guru’s Hymns-2 Harjap Singh Aujla AFTER the creation of Pakistan, Bhai Samund
Singh also joined Bhai Santa Singh in the service of the Golden Temple. They had
very different styles of performing “Shabad Kirtan”. Bhai Samund Singh used to
perform a modified version of “Khayal Gayaki”. He used to leave the “Alaap”,
“Jorh Alaap” and the “Vilambhat Lai” as well as the climax “Dhrut Lai” and sing
the entire “Shabad” in “Madh Lai”. On the other hand Bhai Santa Singh either
sang in the traditional “Reets” handed down from generation to generation or he
created his own “Reets” by improvising new tunes from the source “Ragas” and “Raginis”. More

Growing
Possibilities of a Third World War Dr. Sawraj Singh FOR some time, tensions
between the West and Russia and between the West and China have been
growing rapidly. The West is also facing a humiliating defeat in Iraq
and Afghanistan. Israel, after losing to the Hezbollah in Lebanon, is
now facing tough opposition from Hamas and other Palestinians.
Unfortunately, as the West’s crisis is deepening, instead of giving up
its arrogance and adopting a more compromising attitude, the West is
showing a tendency toward fascism. More

farmers can be categorized into two main segments. One is big farmers
with larger land holdings say from 20 acres and above and small farmers
with less than 10 acres who constitute 80 percent of the total Punjab
peasantry. Small farmers only are prone to suicides because they are the
ones who are under debt. This segment of farmers are the most hard
working and can grow anything provided good quality seeds. More

Pakistan Press
under Attack Reporters without Borders have placed Pakistan at 157th place out
of 168 countries it studied last year. Indeed the country is ranked
higher than two other South Asian countries – Nepal (159) and Burma
(164). However, it is no model for the Maldives (144), Sri Lanka (141),
Bangladesh (137), and India (105) or even neighbour Afghanistan, with
its greenhorn media (130). If there is a press-freedoms model for South
Asia, according to RSF that would be Bhutan (98), which rose an
astounding 44 places in a single year due to the opening of the
kingdom’s first (marginally) privately owned newspaper.
