Canadian Health Care: Sluggish Emergency Services
Khushwant Toor
THE Canadian Medical Association estimates that the country requires
2,500 medical graduates annually but is producing 2,200 a year. 1 in 9
Canadian-trained doctors are treating Americans – the equivalent of two
medical schools worth of students,
according to a study in the “Canadian Medical Association Journal”.
Canada is the second largest source of immigrant doctors to the U.S.,
after India.

ANALYSIS
Poor Abandon Rural Past for Cities Gobind Thukral Punjab, we are told,
would be a large urban conglomerate in next 75 years. So shall be
Haryana, perhaps a little earlier. There could be just pockets of rural
population. In the year 2007, already close to 43 per cent population of
Punjab lives in cities and towns. This shift is taking place fast and
nearly irreversible unless there is a major shift in development
strategies. More
Biased moralities Ishtiaq Ahmed
THE
custodians of public morality and national honour are incensed by the
fact that two South Asian women, Miss Nilofer Bakhtiar from Pakistan and
Miss Shilpa Shetty from India, taking part in charity shows came into
physical contact with men in ways they think are unacceptable. Control
and possession of women is a major marker of the level of civilisation a
society has achieved. It is also an indicator of the sense of equality
and freedom that has been internalised by a society.

Deafening Silence
“Operation Silence" opened with a deafening bang. Why is the silence
still deafening? An answer to this question posed by a senior Pakistani
commentator could provide an answer to the maladies that afflict
Pakistan. The “Operation Silence” launched by Pakistan’s elite commandos
backed by tanks and gunships that lasted 36 hours has succeeded in
ousting the hard line clerics and their equally frozen minded students
from the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa in Islamabad.

Attack on the Red Mosque: Pakistan into a Deeper
Crisis Swaraj Singh THE
just happened attack on the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) is likely to push
Pakistan into a deep crisis that raises possibilities of increased
suicide bombings, a civil war and eventual disintegration. This attack
has sharpened many contradictions. President Musharraf is supported by
the army, which mostly hails from Punjab. More

Time on Earth Ishtiaq Ahmed WHEN
I came to Sweden in 1973, the first novel in the Swedish language
that I read was, Din Stund på Jorden (A time on earth), by Vilhelm
Moberg (1898-1973). I remember it made me sad to follow the story of
a working class Swedish family that emigrates from Sweden and
settles in Minnesota, US. More
Infertility Among Couples Dr. S.S. Sodhi Infertility
is usually defined as failure to conceive after a year or more of regular sexual
activity. It may also refer to the inability to carry a pregnancy to term. To
pinpoint the causes of infertility is very difficult because ovulation,
fertilization and the journey of the fertilized ovum through the fallopian tubes
and finally into the uterus and retention by the uterus are highly intricate
processes. More

October 27, 1999 I was returning from Delhi to Stockholm after doing
my first round of interviews on the partition of Punjab. When the
SAS plane crossed the border into Pakistan the pilot told us to look
to the left side below as we were flying over the city of Lahore.
Somewhere down there was Temple Road Lahore where I was born a few
months before the partition. More
Whither Small Business in India? Vinod Anand Creation
of employment should be the prime policy concern, particularly
developing countries. It should be a policy priority in , especially
when declining employment opportunities are combined with rapidly
growing labour force, and also when the labour force has a
disproportionate number of relatively unskilled workers.

investigations of media killings. More
Why do We Fall Sick? Cure Through Genetics
AS science scales new horizons, it is conquering not only space but also
diseases and sickness. A new pioneering study into the genetic basis of
disease offers new ways of understanding and treating common illnesses
plaguing millions of people. These could be from depression to heart
ailments. Also, high blood pressure, bipolar disorder and rheumatoid
arthritis. Scientists using a radical approach for analysing vast tracts
of the human genome have come out with first results based on a
comprehensive investigation into the genes behind seven medical

Indian Air Force on Buying Spree Gulshan Luthra and Air Marshal
Ashok Goel (Retd)
THE Indian Air Force (IAF) says that it will acquire its new 126 Multi
Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA) from a single vendor only and not from two
or three different manufacturers. Setting aside rumours of multi-vendor
acquisition, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal F H Major, told these
writers in an interview for the India Strategic defence magazine that it
did not make sense to go to two or three sellers just to keep different
countries happy, and that the world’s single biggest fighter jet order
would go only to one supplier. More
ENVIRONMENT
Punjab: a Desiccated landscape Vaibhav Sharma Water, that’s where all
of this started; evolution of all life, bases of human existence and
development, river valley civilizations, and the current day state of
man. The importance of water cannot be poured into words, but it can be
seen through the patterns that history offers. A shining example in our
recent times will clearly be Punjab; the way the state progressed,
flourished and set the benchmark in terms of growth for the rest of the
country. More
TRIBUTE
A Tribute to Chandra Shekhar [1927-2007] FOR
many Chandra Shekhar was just one Indian prime minister who lasted
barely seven months. That is when you measure contribution of an
individual in terms of time span. But if anyone looked at that brief
tenure and that too of a minority government dependent upon a
Machiavellian bunch of Congressmen, the contribution outclasses many
others. There would have
been neither any Operation Blue Star nor demolition of Babbari Masjid.
But there was serious well thought effort to bring peace to the torn
region. He took total command in his hands to talk to Pakistan and bring
peace to Kashmir. More
