What lies ahead for the Canadian Economy? Khushwant Toor writes from
Toronto After 6 years of healthy
growth, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expects Canadian economy
to slow down in 2008. In a recent interview with the media at his
residence in Ottawa, Harper carefully termed the expected slow down as,
“more challenging” for the Canadian economy. This could have serious
political and social consequences. The Conservative Prime Minister who
faces elections anytime in 2008, linked his expectation of slow down in
Canadian economy largely with the economic uncertainty in the U.S. which
is showing no signs of stabilizing any soon, other then just going deep
in dumps. More

ANALYSIS
Ray of Hope Amidst Chaos in South Asia Gobind Thukral
IN the wilds of South Asia, a limited democracy is taking roots despite
a bankrupt, depraved and shortsighted leadership. On January 8 Pakistan
would go to elections and elect a government to work under a civilian
president. The ruling army promises to behave better, though the show is
largely stage managed. In Nepal, the kingship is gone and long lives the
Republic that has taken birth after 240 years of feudal dynastic brutal
rule. The country would hold elections for the constituent assembly in
April. Yet Madhesi issue could create trouble. More
Muslims in the West Ishtiaq Ahmed IT
would not be a terribly original observation to make that Muslims in the
west are currently the object of concern for both the state authorities
as well as civil society. Theoretical literature on the sociology of
immigration suggests that the greater the ethnic and cultural difference
between immigrants and host societies, the greater the difficulties for
integration to take place between them. More

Pakistan: Cauldron of Violence
THE assassination of major opposition
leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has pitched Pakistan
into a political freefall. It has raised fears worldwide that
increasingly bitter divisions in the society are turning the country
into another Iraq. The suicide attack that killed Benazir Bhutto on
December 27 has unleashed a maelstrom of anger among the people. The
unabated violence before the assassination and its tragic aftermath has
left scores of innocent people dead or maimed.

The Blood and Gore in Pakistan Benazir Bhutto's assassination adds to
bloody family history Gobind Thukral
THE grandiose white-domed mausoleum where Benazir Bhutto is buried
alongside her father and two slain brothers is grim witness to the
bloody story of one of Pakistan's pre-eminent political families. It
also mirrors Pakistan’s blood and gore narrative. More
The Assassination of Ms Bhutto Ishtiaq Ahmed THE assassination of Benazir Bhutto comes as a severe shock but not as a
surprise. Some 20 other people, among them five PPP volunteers, were
also killed in the bomb blast that took place. It is being disputed
whether she died of gunshots fired by the assassin(s) or the bomb blast
that accompanied that crime. More
Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination and the Clash of Civilizations Dr Amrik Singh writes from Sacramento,

Bhutto’s Assassination, a Big Blow to America Sawraj

Islamic world. Pakistan has been America’s most important ally in the
fight against terrorism.

Liberty and the Monster State-2 Chaitanya Kalbag Our
Constitution is one of the most enlightened and well-drafted charters
any nation could hope to possess. The Preamble, which sets out the
principles of justice, liberty and equality, also defines fraternity as
“assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of
the Nation”. Note that the individual is placed before the nation. More

Re-asserting the Tradition-2 Gurtej Singh Bhai
Santokh Singh had taken upon himself to write a history of personages
who represented a new tradition, a new social force, and preached an
original spiritual discipline giving birth to a new and different
society. They were not Semitic prophets with a clearly defined, rigidly
laid down, definitive vision of Reality.

An Arain freedom fighter Ishtiaq Ahmed Punjab's reputation as a
loyalist province, which provided the British Indian Army with soldiers
and a solid socio-political support base in the form of a dependent
landed class, has eclipsed its rather variegated history, which includes
heroic tales of resistance to occupation and foreign rule throughout the
ages. Thus, for example, Raja Porus, who ruled a principality in
northern Punjab in the ancient period. More

Year 2007: Rise of Asia and the End of Western Domination Sawraj Singh THE
year 2007 made it clear that the rise of Asia and the end of western domination
are the two major trends of our time. The western countries, particularly
America, faced a deepening economic, social, and cultural crisis. Many people
who were not convinced that the 21st century is going to be Asia’s century are
now beginning to believe in this prediction. More
Sanitation and the caste Gobind Thukral
IN 1972 when Giani Zail Singh became chief minister of Punjab, a
journalist asked him what change at personal level he finds after heading the
government. His simple reply was, “There are of good size, well furnished
bathrooms. Clean toilets. I love a good bath”. He was indeed honest. This
facility in his birth place, village Sandhwa near Kotkapura, did not exist. But
how many Indians really have that facility even of much lower standards.

Global Conflicts and the Violence in Kashmir Ajmer Alam Wani writes from Sri Nagar A new report on armed conflict has hinted of increased military activity
by the Taliban in Afghanistan and Al-Qaida's operations could have a negative
impact on the otherwise promising drop in violence in Kashmir. The report also
says that these prevalent conditions would also affect the stability and chances
for democracy in Pakistan. More

beautiful Himalayan country. Nepal is now Democratic Republic. This decision

Bad Year for the Small
Industry in India
IT may not curtain as yet for the small scale industry in India.
However, its fate does hang in balance. Next year it is feared to do much worse
than in 2006 and 2007. There are some inherent problems; outmoded technology,
primitive management and lack of sufficient resources. Nevertheless, it had been
growing. No longer now, the government in its liberal zeal to promote and
develop larger industries and imports is surely and steadily killing this sector
that sustains millions of small entrepreneurs and workers.
