Bush's Exorbitant Deficit and Cruel Debt
THE legacy which American President George W Bush leaves is not even a mixed bag of blessings and curses, but a straight text drawn from the hell. An average American would be earning less and suffering for want of adequate medicare and unemployment. Yet he leaves the rich richer and those in business or industry in the pink of health. More

Wilted parliamentary democracy

DURING the months of February and March, it is obligatory for the assemblies of different states in India to meet and debate budgets. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the two wings of the Indian parliament also meet to debate and pass annual budgets. These budgets along with annual development plans are important as these have an impact on the lives of millions of people at various levels. These sessions of the parliament or state assemblies provide a chance for our MLAs and MPs to debate and decide the issues about governance, poverty alleviation or agriculture and industrial development. Paradox called Punjab

IT is a paradox that deserves a close scrutiny. Agriculture, for long the engine of the state’s economy has lost steam, growing at less than 2%, while the industrial sector is stuck at 4.2% having attracted less than 2% of the country’s industrial investment proposals. In fact, one estimate puts farm growth at just 1.1 per cent. Experts ascribe the slow growth in per capita in Punjab to sluggishness in agriculture sector on which 65 per cent of the state’s population depends for earning their livelihood. More

Pakistan: death dance
WITH uncontrolled violence and rigging in the air, it should be clear to all; the people of Pakistan and U S Administration that a farce called elections will not serve much purpose.  It would lend no legitimacy to the dictatorial regime of President Pervez Musharraf or his sponsor the Bush Administration. Of course, more and more innocent lives are being snuffed out in the daily bombings at public rallies or street fights among the ethnic tribes and rivals. More

Military and power?
THE million dollar question to which everyone wants an honest and reliable answer is exactly the title of this week's essay: Can we, and should we, expect the military to give democracy a chance? There is of course the additional question: Why should we want civilian rule and democracy? If one were to look at the internal and external indicators poised against the continuation of military rule -- direct and indirect -- there is reason to believe that this time things are very different. For the first time more than 100 senior servicemen, which include retired generals, lieutenant generals, major generals, brigadiers, air marshals and naval admirals, have jointly signed an appeal urging President Musharraf to step down and let the people of Pakistan freely choose their representatives and government. Jat and His Village

Author in Punjabi village clothes with uncle Trilok SinghYOU can take a Jat out of his village, but you cannot take his village out of him. Dr. Gurnam Singh Brard, now settled in Nevada, USA, left Punjab about half a century ago. However, the early years of his life spent in his village in Punjab kept haunting him all these years. Despite a successful career in America, Dr. Brard’s passion for his village is still intact. “In old age, riches in America cannot make up the loss of separation from extended family and break from the ancestral village land”, he expresses his feelings thus. Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy, and the WestMessage from the grave
“I had become aware that suicide squads might be sent from the North-West Frontier Province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas to try to assassinate me immediately on my return,” the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto writes in her book released posthumously on February 12 in New York, London and Islamabad. KHARKOO
Remember the partition of India and the consequent holocaust that left millions dead or homeless. Yet there are countless stories of compassion; heroism and sacrifice that help us restore faith in humankind in an otherwise macabre world of gore and hatred. Here is one such story of faith and love recounted by Raghbir Singh, a retired respected senior bureaucrat in an inimitable style. It tells of a boy’s love for his pet, the tan desi spaniel, the Kharkoo [the Rebel] as he calls it that is full of compassion and brooks no compromise. Read on. More

Theories on Pakistan's origins
Ishtiaq AhmedTHE official position on the origin of Pakistan is something like this: Muslims are expected to lead their lives in accordance with comprehensive Islamic injunctions. For doing that, an Islamic polity is imperative. Hence Indian Muslims were bound to demand a separate state for themselves whenever an opportunity arose. More

Punjab on sale

THE Alkali BJP government in Punjab has devised a completely senseless policy to sell prime public properties. All this is in the name of mopping up revenue to meet the deficit budget and increase commercialisation. These may be government offices and other institutions located at prime places in the burgeoning cities and towns. More

India ranks 11th, China 48th on Global Integrity’s index
THERE is yet another report to show the high level of corruption in India and complete disregard for anti corruption laws. India is ranked 11th among 55 countries for governance and anti-corruption standards in the recent report released by the independent watchdog organisation Global Integrity. India’s ‘moderate’ showing of 75 points is a combination of robust institutions and lack of accountability in key areas. While anti-corruption laws are excellent, law enforcement is weak. More

Sri Lanka: seeing the red
THE echo of bomb blasts and the loss of innocent lives have clearly subdued the festivity in the island nation of Sri Lanka that completes its 60th year of independence. The country has been reeling under severe tension as the ceasefire between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE was called off. A low intensity bomb exploded on the outskirts of the national capital on February 4 which prompted the authorities to add to the already unprecedented security arrangements following a wave of attacks blamed on the Tamil Tiger rebels who are battling the military in the North.
