Rising prices drive power struggle

FOOD prices are rising across the world, we are told by the mighty prime minister and his equally powerful finance minister.  This means they could do little and at the same time, they are asking the state governments to help check prices and even evoke Essentials Commodities Act to provide relief to the people. One does not understand the half hearted measures being announced in a piecemeal manner daily to curb prices. Where was the government when the prices were rising? There is an apparent contradiction. More

Nepal: Maoists as capitalists
FOR over a decade they were leading a guerilla war against exploitation of people by a ruthless king and the feudal lords. Sawraj SinghHISTORY has come full circle from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the victory of Maoists in Nepal. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Western capitalist countries prematurely concluded that Marxism was defeated and that capitalism emerged victorious. ART & LITERATURE

Art as Commerce

THE Sotheby’s is an internationally known New York based auctioneer. The long list of objects that it had scheduled for auction on April 9, in London, included ancient Indian armour. The auctioneer, obviously to boost its commercial interest, promoted this armour as a probable Sikh relic belonging to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. More

Gauhar Jan and Mahant Gajja Singh

Harjap Singh AujlaDURING the early years of 20th century, Calcutta was not only the Imperial Capital of the Indian Sub-continent. It was also the cultural and business capital of India. The British rulers had kept its streets impeccably clean. It was a great center of arts, where music flourished like it does now in Bombay. Calcutta days could boast of a huge army of big name vocalists and even a bigger number of instrumentalists, all trained in strict Hindustani (North Indian) classical traditions. More

Chandigarh: stones and bricks come to life

MY first encounter with Chandigarh, the Fort of Chandi now famously called the City Beautiful was way back in 1956. Soon after matriculation, three of us traveled to the city to seek admission to a newly opened government college. Since it was a mere 50 kms from our place, it suited us admirably. Yet a ramshackle bus stand in sector 17 with tin sheds and few dhabas and tea sheds greeted us. We walked to the college, housed where now sector 23 Government School is located, filled some forms and disappeared to see the marvel what our first visionary Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had said, “World architects come to see what is going on Chandigarh. Population Policy Options
A population policy is considered to be a deliberate attempt by a government to affect the size, structure or geographic distribution of any population. Since all the demographic variables are influenced through fertility, mortality and migration, these three factors are of particular importance in the context of any population policy. Whereas, mortality-influencing policies are directed to bring about a reduction in mortality rates, migration-influencing policies seek to change the flow of internal migration as well as international migration. The fertility-related policies aim at influencing fertility rates and may include both pro-natal and anti-natal programmes, keeping in view the socio-economic needs of a nation. More

He was also chosen for what the council called his unwavering commitment to civil liberties and human rights. Dr Sen is in prison accused of links to Maoist rebels and is held without trial for nearly a year. There had been strong protests by the civil society. Dr Binayak has denied all charges. More

Vitamins 'do us no good and may be harmful'
HERE is a shocking news  for those who make millions of dollars worldwide by manufacturing  and selling vitamins. They do us little good. In fact, vitamins could be harmful. Sensible doctors at major hospitals across the world no longer prescribe these health supplements and emphasize on good dietary habits. A doctor once told an attendant of a patient at the Chandigarh’s PGI Nehru hospital, “ vitamins only help you produce costly urine.” Still consumption of vitamins and other such health supplements continues to grow enormously. MEDIA
Reuters, from pigeons to multimedia
ON April 17 this year a new multi media giant took shape. Thomson Reuters Corp is a giant in the sense of its global reach and it inherits great historical experience of Reuters, a top world news gathering operator and disseminator of information since 1851. Only time would tell how this giant, particularly its non business reporting takes shape. Reuters has until now jealously guarded with zeal, its reporting of news worldwide and provided sharp focussed and varied analysis. More
