| Rise of Russia divides
Europe |
Sawraj
Singh writes from Washington
RUSSIA continues
its rise as a world power; Europe is facing a
growing division between the old and the new Europe.
The old Europe is led by the countries such as
France, Germany and Italy which are very developed,
stable and with strong democratic traditions.
The new Europe consists of countries such as Poland,
Czech Republic, Georgia, Ukraine and Romania which
are poor, unstable and without any strong democratic
traditions.More |

| Even after 26/11 tourism
in Punjab is unlikely to take a nosedive |
Harjap
Singh Aujla
I
have seen reports that as an aftermath of the
horrific tragedies of 26/11 in Bombay, foreign
tourism has gone down drastically in Bombay and
several other parts of India. That is perfectly
understandable. Even the evergreen tourist destination
of Goa is feeling the heat. Reports originating
from New Delhi have also indicated that even the
number of budget tourists staying in low rent
hotels of Pahar Ganj has gone down to mere 20%
compared to last year’s record figures.More |

| ANALYSIS |
Through
the peephole: Development planning in India
|
Vinod
Anand
IN Part 2 of this Paper we had fully analysed
the Growth scenario in the country since 1951. In
this Part we look at the Distributional Effects
in terms of some of the economic indicators.
In order to assess a country’s performance
and its progress towards economic development, we
must supplement, if not supplant, the growth-rate
of GNP by other more microeconomic measures.More |

Will
South Asia become the arena for the Third World
War? |
Sawraj
Singh writes from Washington
THERE are some trends which seem to be emerging
after the terrorist attacks on Mumbai. The biggest
trend is a close alliance between America and
India. The Congress party is gaining influence
at the expense of the BJP. America and India are
mulling an attack on Pakistan as a part of the
movement against terrorism.More |

Human
Rights “alive and well", in theory
only |
HUMAN
Rights Day is celebrated each year on Dec. 10
to honour the U.N. General Assembly’s adoption
of the Universal Declaration of Human rights in
1948. But just as the Geneva Convention has not
given enough protection to prisoners of war, this
Declaration has done little to stop human rights
violations the world over. Democracy itself --
or the freedom it presupposes -- has not been
protective enough.More |

Joginder
Singh Toor
“JUSTICE
is the first virtue of social institutions, as truth
is of systems of thought. A theory however elegant
and economical must be rejected or revised if it
is untrue; likewise laws and institutions no matter
how efficient and well-arranged must be reformed
or abolished if they are unjust.” says John
Rawls, a jurist who held field of Juris prudence
for about two decades.More |

INDIAN parliamentarians face a tough task during
the next general elections that could come up in
April or May next year. It is amply clear from the
results of five state assemblies of Rajasthan, Madhya
Pradesh, Delhi, Mizoram and Chhattisgarh. Elections
are yet not complete in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP
which had ruled over three of the four states could
retain Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.More |

where are the leaders? |

WHAT
has recently happened in Mumbai is highly shocking for
the country. The tussle is still on. Many lives have
been lost, and one does not know what will happen in
time to come. We as Indians naturally share the immediate
and long-period impact of such unexpected trauma. Let
us wish for the peace of the departed souls.More
