Lahore under siege: Two terrorists killed, 1 held alive

Lahore is under siege battling its second terrorist attack in a month. Heavily armed militants have attacked an elite police training academy in Manavan on the outskirts of Lahore, just 12 km from the Wagah border. Police and army forces are engaged in a fierce encounter for well over four hours. Over 20 people have been killed and the number is expected to climb higher.

Hundreds are reportedly injured. However, two of the attackers have been killed in the firing by security forces while one suspect has been arrested from the scene of the crisis. The attack comes less than a month after the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.

NSA against Varun is 'misuse of a serious law': Maneka

Terming invoking of stringent NSA against her son Varun as "misuse of a serious law", BJP MP Maneka Gandhi on Monday said such a practice could be very dangerous for the country.

"What has happened with Varun is injustice to him and injustice to the country because misuse of such a serious law is, I think, very dangerous for the country. Let us see what happens now," Maneka told reporters in Bareilly after meeting Varun who was sent to judicial custody on Saturday.

Capt Kanwaljit Singh to be cremated at 2 PM

Capt Kanwaljit Singh former minister of cooperation Punjab who died in a road accident on Sunday would be cremated Monday at Chandigarh sector 25 cremation ground at 2 PM.

The Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has convened an emergency meeting of the cabinet tomorrow to mourn the tragic demise of Capt Kanwaljit Singh. According to Chief Minister’s Media Advisor Harcharan Bains the meeting of the cabinet would be held at Punjab Bhawan at 12:00 Noon.

'GM, Chrysler have no 'viable' plans'

General Motors and Chrysler have failed to lay out viable plans for their ailing companies, the White House said Monday, in a tough review which could shake up the nation's key auto industry. In two separate reports, a task force set up by President Barack Obama analyzed the future prospects for both companies and warned they had failed to comply with the terms of a 17.4 billion dollar government bailout.

Obama is due to unveil his plan for the future of the key industry at 11:00 am (1500 GMT) Monday with both companies seeking an additional 21.6 billion dollars to survive the economic downturn which has sent global car sales plunging.

Gambhir, VVS guide India to draw in 2nd Test

With some timely performances by Gambhir (137), Dravid (62), Tendulkar (64) and Laxman (124*), India scored 476/4 in the 2nd innings to draw 2nd Test against the Kiwis. Both the captains agreed to call off the day, as they saw no possible result coming out. India's savior came in the form of Gautam Gambhir who batted for almost 11 hours to save the Test match for his side.

Jesse Ryder was declared Man of the Match for his outstanding double century in New Zealand's first innings. New Zealand scored 619/9 and declared their first innings whereas, India managed to pile up only 305 and the batting line-up crumbled. They were forced to follow on and batted till last day to manage 476/4, which proved to be sufficient to draw the Napier Test.
