2008 riot case: Raj Thackeray granted bail
Five close aides of Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah
Mehsud have been killed in a shootout with police,
who raided a militant hideout in this southern
port city. The five were killed after they refused
to surrender and engaged the police team in a
gunfight at the hideout near Gadap town, located
close to the national highway, city police chief
Waseem Ahmed said on Friday night.
"Five other persons managed to escape and
we are in their pursuit," he said. The police
official said the five killed were close accomplices
of Tehreek-e-Taliban leader Mehsud, who is on
the most wanted list of the Pakistan and US governments.
"We have recovered heavy ammunition and explosive
material from the site where these people were
hiding," Ahmed said.

Normal life in Punjab crippled due to power
crisis
Normal life in Punjab has been crippled due to
long power cuts, scorching heat with temperature
touching 46 percent on Sunday. To cope with the
emergency situation and to give power to tubewells
for paddy cultivation, Punjab government has
changed the office timings to 7.30 to 1.30 PM and
completely shut down the arc furnance and rolling
mills for a week beside closing shopping centers
at 7.30 PM.
The Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) Saturday
asked industries to observe a mandatory 72-hour
off every week to check the power deficit in the
state. “This compulsory three-day weekly off is a
big shock for industrialists. PSEB officials don’t
think about the industry and its working style but
just release illogical orders from their offices,”
said B.S. Anand, president of the Mohali
Industries Association.

India to grow 7% in FY10 if monsoons do not fail
The Indian economy will grow at 7 percent in
the year to March 2010, if the monsoon rains do
not fail, Suresh Tendulkar, chairman of the Prime
Minister's economic advisory council, told
reporters on Monday. The July-September monsoon,
crucial to agriculture and rural incomes, has been
delayed and are forecast to be at 93 percent of
the long-term average.
In response to a question on where he saw
inflation by the end of the fiscal year, Tendulkar
said: "WPI (wholesale price index inflation) would
still be under 5-6 percent, if monsoons are all
right. If monsoons fail, it will be little more."

Bolt wins 200m at Jamaican Championships
Double Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt, who
won the 100 metres crown the day before, easily
captured the 200 metre national title on the final
day of the Jamaican Championships.
World record holder Bolt posted a modest time of 20.25 seconds while
running into a slight headwind yesterday.
The 22-year old blazed off the curve, but eased up
as soon as he hit the straight and realized he had
a comfortable lead. "I ran the corner very hard
because a lot of fast guys were in the race," he
said. "But when I came off the corner I looked
back and just shut it down.”
