India hits back, asks China to back-off from PoK

After China's Arunachal Pradesh offensive, India today hit back, objecting to its engagement in projects in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and asking it to stop such activities taking a "long-term view" of Sino-India relations. India, which is upset over China's objection yesterday to the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Arunachal Pradesh, took a strong view of President Hu Jintao's remarks that his country will continue to engage in projects in the territory of Jammu and Kashmir "illegally occupied" by Pakistan.

"Pakistan has been in illegal occupation of parts of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir since 1947. The Chinese side is fully aware of India's position and our concerns are about Chinese activities in Pakistan occupied Kashmir," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said in a statement.

Bihar: Why the RSS is upset with Nitish

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a new cause for concern in Bihar - schemes being run by Janata Dal (U) for minorities. Tension between the allies has mounted after the Nitish Kumar government sanctioned land in Kishanganj district to set up a branch of the Aligarh Muslim University. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) calls it minority appeasement and has asked the BJP to take up the issue.

"The RSS has flagged the issue to us and the govt will consider it," said BJP's spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad. The BJP plans to ask Nitish to go slow on his minority agenda. There are fears that the minority message may displease dominant castes - the BJP's core vote - ultimately benefitting the Congress, and making Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

RBI may hold rates steady: PM panel

The RBI is not likely to hike interest rates in its monetary policy review on October 27 even as inflation is expected to rise to 6 per cent this fiscal-end from 0.7 per cent at present, the Prime Minister's Economic Panel said on Wednesday.

"I don't think the RBI will revise interest rates in the policy review... As far as the monetary policy is concerned, it has followed an accommodative policy, and unless inflation pressures are very strong, there may not be any change in the stance," Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC) Chairman C Rangarajan told reporters.

Nadal, Djokovic advance at Shanghai Masters

Rafael Nadal celebrated an opening-round win in Grand Slam style while Novak Djokovic moved through ruthlessly as the top two seeds reached the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday. Nadal, crushed in a Beijing semi-final by Marin Cilic four days ago, couldn't control his fist pumps and enthusiasm after getting back on track over James Blake 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.

Second seed Djokovic, the Beijing champion, defeated Italian Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-1. It was the opposite story for third seed Juan Martin Del Potro as the US Open champion crashed for a second straight week in Asia.
