US to address India-Pakistan river row: Hillary Clinton

The US on Friday said that Indo-Pak differences over sharing of river waters will be a component of its strategic dialogue with Pakistan and it will try to address "international disputes" concerning this issue. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is on an official visit here, made the remarks during an interaction with women civil society leaders.

She was responding to a question from a participant about India allegedly "strangulating" Pakistan's economic growth by choking the flow of river waters.

Halt violence, come and talk: Chidambaram to Naxals

Home Minister P Chidambaram has made yet another appeal to the CPI Maoists to abjure violence. He says if the Maoists stop violence, the Centre will persuade the states to talk to them on their demands, including forest rights, land acquisition, industrialisation and development.

The minister made it clear that no talks could be held in an atmosphere of violence. "The violence by Naxalites must end. The state governments have a duty to stop this violence," he said while addressing the media in New Delhi.

Bhattal calls upon Akali Govt. to announce matching bonus

Punjab Congress Legislature Party Leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has thanked the UPA Government for announcing bonus of Rs. 50/- per quintal on paddy.

while seeking a matching bonus from present SAD-BJP regime in the State. Recalling that during the previous month, a delegation of Punjab Congress had met the Union Agriculture Minister & the Prime Minister to provide bonus to farmers on paddy, in view of difficulties due to scanty rains and power scarcity, she said that if Akalis claimed themselves to be 'farmer-friendly', Punjab C.M. should come up with matching bonus announcement from State Coffers also.

Airtel joins tariff war; introduces pay-per-second plan

Joining the tariff war, India's largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel on Friday introduced a "pay per second" plan across the country. In this plan, called Freedom Plan, Airtel customers will be charged one paise per second for all Local and STD calls to Airtel numbers and 1.20 paise per second for local and STD calls to other networks.

Some of the new operators, however, are offering pay per second tariff plan across networks. The plan will be available initially only to pre-paid subscribers of Airtel, an Airtel statement said.

Kovalainen pips Hamilton in second free practice

Heikki Kovalainen topped the times in the second free practice session for the season-ending and inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Britain's Lewis Hamilton, who dominated the first session, was the man to beat for most of the second session being held in twilight and darkness but his 28-year-old Finnish teammate just managed to outpace his McLaren Mercedes in the final minutes.

Kovalainen clocked a best time of one minute and 41.307 seconds, beating Hamilton by just one-tenth of a second although the entire top ten were only separated by six-tenths of a second.
