Mulayam opportunistic; will work for Hindutva: Kalyan

A day after being openly snubbed by Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, rebel Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kalyan Singh said he never had any intention to join the outfit and signalled his desire to return to his parent party by offering his services for strengthening "Hindutva".

Claiming he had been "politically exploited" by the SP leader, Kalyan Singh expressed regret for associating with Mulayam Singh's intention to weaken the BJP and said he was ready to make amends for it. "Neither did I ever accept Mulayam Singh's offer to join his party, nor will I ever do so for all times to come," Kalyan Singh told media persons here.

Punjab to set up 13 new government degree colleges: Badal

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Saturday announced that 13 new government degree colleges would be set up at a cost of Rs.104 crore in educationally backward districts of Amritsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Mansa, Moga, Muktsar,Nawanshahar, Patiala and Sangrur on the recommendations of the University Grants Commission.

Badal was presiding over a function to mark the commemoration of silver jubilee of Government College Mohali. In order to boost the higher and technical education, the Chief Minister said that the Central University at Bathinda had already started its academic session.

Essar buys Warid Telecom in Uganda, Congo

Ruias-owned Essar group on Sunday announced acquisition of majority stake in Dhabi Group's Warid Telecom operation in Uganda and Congo, a move that would further strengthen Indian firms' presence in South Africa.

The combined enterprise value of Warid Telecom Uganda and Warid Telecom Congo is estimated to be USD 318 million. According to sources close to the development, the Essar Group has acquired 51 per cent equity for about USD 160 million. Essar investment in Warid Telecom in Africa is part of its strategic plans to grow its businesses in Africa.

Maradona to face FIFA over profane rants at media

Argentina coach Diego Maradona will face a FIFA disciplinary panel on Sunday which has the power to ban him from matches at next year's World Cup. Maradona has been summoned to the headquarters of football's world governing body to explain his expletive-filled rants aimed at the Argentine media in a post-match press conference minutes after his team clinched its passage to the finals in South Africa last month.

Under Article 58 of FIFA's discipline code, the panel must ban Maradona from stadiums for at least five matches if it finds he "(offended) the dignity of a person or group of persons through contemptuous, discriminatory or denigratory words."
