West Bengal admits to failure, says had info on
Naxal attack
The
West Bengal government on Wednesday admitted it
had some intelligence warnings that Maoists were
"assembling" in the area around Shilda
police camp which was attacked in the biggest
offensive by Naxals in the state.
The
admission by the government came a day after an
outraged Centre slammed the Left Front government
expressing dismay at the "unprofessional,
incompetent, untrained and inadequate" response
of the state police force to the Maoist attack
on Monday evening.

India not deterred by Qaida warning on IPL, hockey
India has said it is not deterred by the warning
issued by the Al Qaida to international sportsmen
against visiting the country for forthcoming events.
But Australia and New Zealand have already said
they want reassurances about security at the Hockey
World Cup starting later this month.
On Wednesday, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram
brushed aside the reported warning issued by Kashmir-based
militant Illyas Kashmiri , saying: "We are
not deterred by Illyas Kashmiri's warnings...Illyas
Kashmiri cannot dictate our course of action".

SAD chairman Amritsar Planning Committee booked
in murder case
Senior
Akal Leader and serving Chairman District Planning
Committee Amritsar Vir Singh Lopoke besides three
others booked under section 302 IPC for allegedly
having involvement in the murder of BKU (Bhartiya
Kissan union) Organizing Secretary for Punjab
Sadhu Singh Takhtupura.
However,
Takhtupura was brutally murdered yesterday with
iron rods and swords in the border village Bhindian
Saida in full public view. Nearly group of fifteen
people had intercepted the jeep of Takhtupura
who was moving with his friends village to village
to motivate the people to assemble at Ajanla town
for rally which was organized on February 21 against
the atrocities of Punjab police.

Marketmen not too bullish on Budget
Over
the years the market has always been buoyant before
the Budget but this time around the mood is quite
different with marketmen fearing that Budget 2010
will see finance minister Pranab Mukherjee taking
away more sops through a stimulus rollback.
"This
is the right time to withdraw the stimulus. It
has worked well, so it is time to retire it,"
says planning commission member Saumitra Chaudhuri.
And it is this worry that has kept the market
mood subdued.

India pledges safe sports events amid security
fears
India
vowed to "protect every player" in upcoming
major sports events in the country after a weekend
bombing and alleged new threats raised fresh concerns
over security. "We will provide full protection
to every player, every coach, every official who
participates in the forthcoming hockey, cricket
and Commonwealth Games," Home Minister P.
Chidambaram told reporters.
New
security worries surfaced ahead of the field hockey
World Cup later this month after last Saturday's
bombing at a restaurant in the western city of
Pune which killed 11 people. A previously unknown
Islamist splinter of a bigger Pakistan-based group
claimed responsibility for the attack in a call
to an Indian newspaper.
