West Bengal admits to failure, says had info on Naxal attack

The West Bengal government on Wednesday admitted it had some intelligence warnings that Maoists were "assembling" in the area around Shilda police camp which was attacked in the biggest offensive by Naxals in the state.

The admission by the government came a day after an outraged Centre slammed the Left Front government expressing dismay at the "unprofessional, incompetent, untrained and inadequate" response of the state police force to the Maoist attack on Monday evening.

India not deterred by Qaida warning on IPL, hockey

India has said it is not deterred by the warning issued by the Al Qaida to international sportsmen against visiting the country for forthcoming events. But Australia and New Zealand have already said they want reassurances about security at the Hockey World Cup starting later this month.

On Wednesday, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram brushed aside the reported warning issued by Kashmir-based militant Illyas Kashmiri , saying: "We are not deterred by Illyas Kashmiri's warnings...Illyas Kashmiri cannot dictate our course of action".

Marketmen not too bullish on Budget

Over the years the market has always been buoyant before the Budget but this time around the mood is quite different with marketmen fearing that Budget 2010 will see finance minister Pranab Mukherjee taking away more sops through a stimulus rollback.

"This is the right time to withdraw the stimulus. It has worked well, so it is time to retire it," says planning commission member Saumitra Chaudhuri. And it is this worry that has kept the market mood subdued.

India pledges safe sports events amid security fears

India vowed to "protect every player" in upcoming major sports events in the country after a weekend bombing and alleged new threats raised fresh concerns over security. "We will provide full protection to every player, every coach, every official who participates in the forthcoming hockey, cricket and Commonwealth Games," Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters.

New security worries surfaced ahead of the field hockey World Cup later this month after last Saturday's bombing at a restaurant in the western city of Pune which killed 11 people. A previously unknown Islamist splinter of a bigger Pakistan-based group claimed responsibility for the attack in a call to an Indian newspaper.
